This is my first blog - ever! Thanks Suzanne for setting this up for us to tell about the fabulous time at ALA in DC. I loved reading Renee G's statement about Julie Andrews - definately a highlight of the conference. I can vouch that Renee was on the edge of her seat; even mouthing the words of the songs during the video clip of past performances! A highlight for me was visiting with authors at the YALSA Breakfast and meeting Lois Lowry. Bridgett Johnson and I nearly dined with Nikki Grimes at the Caldecott/Newbery Banquet...until the table hosts ever so diplomatically informed us we were at the table reserved for Penguin Publishing! We discreetly took our white wine to another table! The event itself was like the Emmy's - fancy gowns & tuxedoes. The recipients gave such nice acceptance speeches too. Thank goodness for experienced travelers! Renee McGrath and her darling Cara got me through the airport to DC and Sami helped me navigate the Metro - suitcase and all! The 5 Montanans had a great time with the gals from Idaho and plan to continue our Rural Forum sometime soon. I couldn't believe the humidity but needed a jacket when I arrived back home. - Jodi Oberweiser
